But before I compare these two terms, let's first define the definition of Patriotism and Nationalism in order to have ideas and understand more this blog.

The noun patriotism, which means “devoted love, support, and defense of One’s country; national loyalty,” is used to describe persons who are actively committed in defending their country, such as military personnel and members of state and local governments. However, patriotism can manifest itself in a wide variety of ways other than through political and military service. Early in the 1700s, the word “patriotism” first appears in literature. It’s interesting to note that by the 1770s, “a member of a resistance movement, a freedom fighter” specifically, those who fought against the British in the American Revolutionary War could be referred to as patriots. These associations still hold true today. The word patriot, first attested in the 1500s, is the root of the word “patriotism.” Paternal, patriarchy, and even the word “father” in English are all related to this word, which ultimately derives from the Greek patrits, “fellow-countryman or lineage member.”

Now, Nationalism on the other hand, is “the policy or doctrine of asserting the Interests of one’s own nation viewed as separate from the interests of other nations or the Common interests of all nations.” In short, nationalism is a kind of excessive, aggressive Patriotism. Modern nationalism is rooted, in part, in French and American revolutions that Fought for the sovereignty of their people over monarchies. This historic nationalism is generally viewed favorably, a cornerstone of Western liberalism and democracy.

Now, that we already have insight and overview about Patriotism and Nationalism, let's now discuss what is the main difference between these two.

The following are the Main Differences Between Nationalism and Patriotism

* Nationalism is how much an individual is proud of his/her country whereas Patriotism is a term used for expressing the love for one’s nation and protecting its country.

* The term Nationalism comes from the term “Nation” , while the word Patriotism originated from the Greek word “patēr” which means 'fatherland'.

* Nationalism has classification, it can come in many various types like Ethnic nationalism, ideological nationalism, cultural nationalism, Civic Nationalism, and so on whereas Patriotism has no classification.

* Nationalists may not take criticism of their nation, whereas Patriots accept criticism and believe in the overall improvement of the country.

* Nationalism can sometimes become violent while Patriotism is a peaceful idealogy with no violence views.

* Nationalism believe that their nation is the best while Patriotism respects all nations equally.

* There are no professions that are considered Nationalist professions, but there are Professions that are considered to be patriotic.

I know, after reading the definition between Patriotism and Nationalism, we can now say and conclude that Patriotism generally has a positive connotation. It’s used for various positive sentiments, attitudes, and actions involving loving one’s country and serving the great good of all its people. While, Nationalism generally has a negative connotation. It’s used for political ideologies and movements that a more extreme and exclusionary love of one’s country at the expense of foreigners, immigrants, and even people in a country who aren’t believed to belong in some way, often racial and religious grounds. Thus, Nationalism believes in the superiority of their own country, which may downgrade the views on other countries, whereas in patriotism, a patriot respects his or her country simultaneously will respect all other countries too.
