What makes Filipino values unique
We all know that our values came from other countries who colonized our country from the past century. We can say that our values as Filipinos is highly distinguished from others because it was influenced and develop from the culture, traditions, values and ideals of the foreign countries that colonized us before whom we embrace and keep practicing up until today generations. Since back then, our country the Philippines was colonized and being attacked by Spaniards, Japanese, and Americans we were able to adopt and influence some of their values, traditions and culture.
Now, in the Philippines, we can observe that we live by a wide range of diverse values since our country Philippines is an archipelago of 7,641 islands that are categorized broadly under the three main geographical divisions from north to south: LUZON which is the northern region, VISAYAS which is the central region and MINDANAO, the southern region. I can say that we Filipinos are unique because even though there are roughly 182 different ethnic groups in the Philippines, we are still diverse and share values and traditions with one another. Thus, despite our differences, we Filipinos unite by practicing our ideals and traditions together.
Now, giving the fact that our traditions and values came from the mark left by our colonizers we also have a vast array of unique values that set us apart and made us special and unique from other countries. In the Philippines, being Family oriented is important to us Filipinos, and we prioritize our relationships with them above everything else. We love to share our loves and ideas with them. We also have different names with them as a form of showing respect and gratitude to them. We call our father as Tatay, mother as nanay, Elder sister as Ate or manang and Elder brother as Kuya or manong. As we speak with them or to other people, we always used the word "Po" and "Opo" since it is a sign of being respectful as a Filipino.
We Filipinos are also known as being hospitable since we welcome our tourist and guest with an open arms and warm greetings. We Filipinos are kind and approachable since we care for and amuse guests in such a welcoming manner that we regard them as members of our own family regardless of what their races, languages, skin color and sexual orientation. We see them all equal and an acquaintance to us Filipinos. We also respect our elders, which is a part of our proudly Filipino culture and values by pagmamano or asking their hands and grab it towards our forehead as well as kissing the elder's forehead which is still widely practicing and done by all Filipinos today.
We Filipinos also embody values like being a maka tao it simply means by respecting each other's rights and opinions regardless of the existing differences in between. Filipinos are naturally kind, gentle, generous, hospitable, hardworking, obedient and polite which made a great impact to the world. Being a Maka - Diyos, we Filipinos believe in the supernatural power of God who created the heaven and earth, the one who bring forth life to mankind. Integrate the power of faith by teaching us to value the morality of each other towards their actions, words and thoughts. A magpasalamat, mapagpasalamat means Filipinos always know how to show gratitude. That's why we have utang na loob as a Filipino trait. We always know how to return a favor. Being Matatag is also evident in the world renowned resiliency of the Filipino spirit. A masigasig or being attentive and enthusiastic. A makabansa or being proud of our Filipino nationality and showing respect to our Philippine flag. A mapagmalasakit or showing kindness and caring for other people, and A magalang or being respectful to other people.
These are the principles that we adopted as Filipinos that allowed us to develop into the people we are today. Filipino beliefs are distinctive and unique precisely because we are one and share they same values and traditions regardless where ethnicity you belong.
